PRESENT THE FLY WITH INTENTION

Let the current shape the drift.

Try a few adaptable presentations, and pay attention to how line and rod position change the fly’s path.

A fixed-line outfit makes small changes in rod angle and position easy to feel. Begin with a natural drift, then vary depth, movement and the time the fly spends in a likely holding place.

FIELD PROMPT

Follow the fly with the rod tip and keep enough control to notice a take. If the fly speeds across the current, adjust your position or line angle.

Fish behavior varies by water and conditions. Treat each presentation as an experiment, not a guaranteed result.

LESSON 01Start with a drift

Cast above or across a target and follow the fly with the rod tip. Keep enough line control to notice a take without dragging the fly unnaturally. Watch the fly and the water around it.

LESSON 02Change one variable

If the fly passes untouched, adjust one thing at a time. A different lane, depth, angle or pause can change the presentation. What works depends on the current and the fish; these are experiments, not guaranteed rules.

  • PauseHold the fly briefly near a seam or pocket, if the current allows.
  • PulseAdd a subtle rod-tip movement and observe whether the fly behaves naturally.
  • Lift and dropRaise or lower the fly through a short lane to explore depth.
  • ReachChange your position or rod angle to reduce unwanted drag across the drift.
LESSON 03Set and land fish with care

Use a controlled lift to respond to a take. Keep the rod within its intended bend, guide the fish toward a safe landing spot, wet your hands before handling it, and follow local rules for retention and release.
