Water gives. So do we.

Free fishing knowledge, and a fair place for local businesses.

  • 3,441waters in 15 countries
  • 9,667guides, lodges and shops, each free to claim
  • 11,178USGS gauges to check

Here for the water.

Our story

Water gives us joy. It is our ritual and our way to bond with nature. We built Legendary Fly Gear to give some of that back: fishing knowledge free for every angler, and a fair place for the local guides, fly shops and lodges who make good days possible.

First light on a riffle. The quiet between casts. A morning on the river with a friend, or alone, paying attention.

That is the ritual. It slows us down and puts us back in touch with the places we fish and the people we fish with.

A good day still depends on knowing where to go, what the river is doing and who knows it best. That knowledge should not sit behind a paywall. So we gather it in one place, say where every fact comes from, and give it away.

Knowledge, free for every angler.

No paywall. No account needed to read.

More about each
Waters
3,441 rivers, creeks, lakes and flats in 50 US states and 14 other countries. Each page names its official source and links the agency’s regulations and access pages where it publishes them.
Live river flows
Search 11,178 USGS gauges. Readings come with the normal range for the date, and trout and safety guidance quoted from the agency that wrote it. 1,072 water pages show a live gauge.
Destinations and trip planning
79 destination hubs with the waters, guides, shops and license pages around each town, and a trip planner that budgets the days in your own numbers. Estimates, never invented prices.
Fly and gear tools
A fly finder, a fly identifier, a gear finder and a waterway finder, for the questions you have before a trip and on the bank.
Restrooms near the water
Public restrooms near destinations and waters, from OpenStreetMap, so a long day on the river is easier for everyone.
Learning
Western and Tenkara field guides, lesson by lesson, and a video library sorted by topic.
Community
Post a trip, share a Fish Tale, and join or start a group: a local club, a women’s group, a crew of beginners. Free, and private when you want it to be.

We give 5% of our advertising revenue to watershed conservation and veterans’ fishing groups.

Local knowledge lives with local people.

We send you to them, not around them.

More about each
Local guides, outfitters and lodges
6,408 guides, outfitters and lodges have a page, built from public map data and their own websites. Every page is free, and claiming it is free.
Fly shops
3,259 shops in 13 countries. When you need flies, a license or the local word on what is fishing, we point you to the shop near the water.
Veteran- and service-member-owned businesses
416 guides and shops in our veterans directory, 95 of them veteran- or military-family-owned by their own website or the SBA’s register. We never guess anyone’s service; each fact shows its source.
Women on the water
Organisations that get women into fly fishing, women’s groups in the community, and a trip planner that can put women-led guides and women’s trips first, labelled with where that came from.
Conservation groups
Watershed groups and angler charities get 50% off our advertising list prices once their registration is verified.

Listing, claiming and bookings are free. Pricing

How we keep it honest

  • Every fact names its source.

The agency, the USGS gauge, the business’s own website or a public register, with the date we read it. We don’t invent conditions, prices, reviews or credentials; where we don’t know, we say so.

  • Listings are free, and so is claiming yours.

A listing shows as Claimed only after its business claims it and we approve the claim. We never copy a business’s descriptions or reviews, and we remove its photos on request.

  • Ads look like ads.

Every ad carries a “Sponsored” label and the advertiser’s name, and never moves an organic listing. Ads are matched to the page, never to the person: never to your preferences, your location or whether you have told us you served. Advertisers see totals, never a list of who saw or clicked. Ads policy.

  • Affiliate links are disclosed.

Some gear links earn us a commission at no cost to you. No retailer pays to be included or listed first. Affiliate disclosure.

  • No hidden fees.

Legendary Fly Gear doesn’t take payment for bookings yet and adds no fee: you pay the business directly. When we do take payments, our fee will be its own line on every quote and receipt, before anyone pays. Paid plans for businesses are not on sale yet; a business pays only if it chooses to advertise.

  • Real photographs, credited.

Every photograph we publish names the photographer and its license, or the business website it came from. Photo credits.

What we believe.

A business should be built on giving.

We believe a business should be built on giving. Be honest about the work you do. Help the people around you succeed, and keep helping them over the long run.

The more anglers, guides, shops and lodges who do well because this site exists, the more likely it is that we do well too. That is the whole plan.

It is also why we give part of what we earn back to the water and the people on it. We give 5% of our advertising revenue to watershed conservation and veterans’ fishing groups.

If a fact is wrong, a fee is unclear or a listing is yours and needs fixing, tell us and we will put it right.
