Walk through a cast
Take one step at a time. Repeating the drill is more useful than chasing distance.
Check your lane
Look behind, overhead and beside you. Secure the hook or practice with a flyless line, and choose a clear target.
Practice in a clear area. Check for people, branches and power lines before casting.
LESSON 01Practice the motion
Begin in an open area with a flyless practice line or a barbless hook secured. Check behind and around you before each cast.
- 1 · Start balancedHold the rod comfortably and point toward a clear target.
- 2 · Move smoothly backAccelerate the rod with a short, controlled motion; let the line extend behind you.
- 3 · Cast forward and stopMake a smooth forward motion and stop the rod so the line turns over toward the target.
- 4 · Adjust, don’t forceChange stroke length and timing to suit the line, fly and available space.
LESSON 02On the water
Try to place the fly first and keep unnecessary casting line off the water when the presentation allows. Wind, overhead cover, current and the target may call for a lower rod angle or a different cast. Do not force a long cast through trees or people.
LESSON 03A useful drill
Pick a safe, visible target at a comfortable distance. Make several casts with the same setup, changing one part of the motion at a time. Accuracy and control are more useful first goals than maximum distance.
