Alaska

Run timing on the Kenai and Russian rivers, from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. Each row is charted only for the months its source gives; where a source names an insect but gives no months, it is not charted. Conditions vary by water and year: use this to plan, then ask a local shop.

What each source says

The source's own words behind every row, so you can see exactly where the months come from.

  • Early-run Chinook (king) salmon, Kenai River, Alaska (May to June): The early-run usually starts to enter the river in mid-May. The early-run fishing peaks in mid-June, and is over by the end of June.[1]
  • Early-run sockeye (red) salmon, Russian River, Alaska (June to July): The early-run usually arrives by June 15, with the historic midpoint of the run occurring on June 27. Most of the early-run fish have completed their migration by mid-July, although in some years the fish are late, or hold in the Kenai River.[2]
  • Anadromous Dolly Varden, Kenai River, Alaska (July to September): Anadromous Dolly Varden enter the river in early July, with the run continuing into September.[1]
  • Coho (silver) salmon, Kenai River, Alaska (July to October): Coho or silver salmon arrive to the Kenai River in late July, with more fish arriving early to mid-August through early October.[1]
  • Coho (silver) salmon, Kenai-Russian river confluence and Russian River weir, Alaska (July to September): Coho or silver salmon arrive at the confluence of the Kenai and Russian rivers by late July or early August. By the second week of September, the bulk of the run has passed through the weir.[2]
  • Late-run Chinook (king) salmon, Kenai River, Alaska (July): Late-run Chinook salmon enter the river in early July, with the best fishing found from mid- to late July and are generally considered mainstem spawning fish.[1]
  • Late-run sockeye (red) salmon, Lower Kenai River, Alaska (July to August): Late-run sockeye salmon enter the lower Kenai River in early July, peak in late July, and generally have finished their run by late August. Most fish arrive during the last two weeks of July.[1]
  • Pink (humpy) salmon, Kenai River, Alaska (July to September): Pink salmon are found in the Kenai River from late July through September.[1]

Use it on the water

Pick flies with the fly finder, check an insect with the fly identifier, and read the flow and temperature on each water page before you go.
